O'Brien and the Horrors of Room 101

1. O'Brien is known as a member of the thought police. When he was in Room 101 torturing Winston, he couldn't read Winston's mind, in fact O'Brien has a connection with Winston. Back in Part 3 Chapter 2, O'Brien mentioned that he was in the same position that Winston was getting beaten by guards because of the thought crime he committed years ago. Plus he has been in most of the tortures in Room 101, so that tells me that he can tell that the tortured person's feelings and what might they say next in response to his questions. Concerning the part where O'Brien was spying at Winston seven years ago, I do believed that O'Brien permeate Winston's dream during that time. Even though it is impossible to permeate people's dream, Winston was probably sleep talking and O'Brien brainwashed his dream by talking to him using the power of the telescreen.

2. During Winston's torture in Room 101, O'Brien had mentioned to him that the Party was going to kill him sometime in the near future. But before he dies, O' Brien told him that he will continue with the torture until he accepts, and love the party and Big Brother. Even thought the people getting tortured in room 101 will not return to society, the party will continue with the torture and "rehabilitation" to make them love and accept the party and Big Brother. It is the only was the Party can brainwash people that hates Big Brother and the party into loving it without any doubts of turning back to their old thoughts. It is the Party's way to forgive thought criminals for their hatred of the party and Big Brother by giving them the favor of changing the though criminal's beliefs into loving Big Brother and the party with their tortures inside room 101.

3. Room 101 is the room where torture takes place from the party to "rehabilitate" people into loving Big Brother and the party.

Winston's Dream of Death

Winston's dream was all about the last days he spent with his mother before she disappeared. His mother after his father's disappearance was described in the chapter as "spiritless". He regrets the last days he spent with his mother because he was acting selfish. This can be said during the time when he took a piece of chocolate from his sister's hand and fled downstairs noticing the looming expression his mother had when he looked back at her. That was the last time he saw his mother and his sister. This dream has triggered what he thinks is the dirty tricks the party plays upon people. The Party's tricks in his point of view was to persuade people that feelings don't exist in reality and at the same time steal away the power people had to change the world. This means that the party will prevent people from destroying their totalitarian government just by making people feel nothing towards themselves, other people, but feelings toward the party.

During chapter VII, Winston and Julia again talks about that sooner or later they will be caught and what the party will do to both of them if they either confess or not. the hope that Winston holds if they get caught is that Julia wont betray him and vise versa. If that happens, then their relationship between each other will diminish into pieces since no love is shown in a betrayal. Winston also mentioned that his feelings will always exist no matter what the party does to him. Even if the party changes his thoughts, he will still feel something out of that changed thought which Winston thinks is a big victory over the party.

Reaction to Part II Chapter 6 of 1984

This was so far the best part of the book ever. Both Winston and O'Brien has finally met with each other face to face. But this short meeting has some unexpected twist to it. This twist all started with O'Brien without saying his name mentioning Syme who was recently vanished to Winston considering it was a thought crime. It continued with O'Brien giving his address to Winston to pick up a newspeak dictionary at that location. It took me in surprise when these events occurred in front of a telescreen. This tells me that Winston along With O'Brien will face the possibility of being vanished since the party saw what they have committed. Most importantly this entire short meeting backed up the fact that O'Brien is on the side of destroying Big Brother and the party. The actions that he has committed only shows how much he hates the party which is something that Winston was expecting of him.

Reaction to Part II Chaper 5 of 1984

Chapter 5 of 1984 was not that interesting enough, except for the part in which revels the point of view of how Julia hated the party. It is like Julia doesn't really care of the things the Party are doing to keep the truth away from the people of Oceania, which is the most important reason to hate the party in the first place. When Winston was giving examples of the party hiding the truth from Oceania, Julia responded to it as if is not life threatening. Here's an example in which Winston was talking about Jones, Aaronson, and Rutherford and the reason they were arrested and killed by the party. Her response in regards to what Winston was saying was a lot like saying wow that was boring. The point is that the Party is telling you false information about certain events and some citizens are not noticing about it, or they are getting vaporized by knowing it creating a threat to the party. Most of all, Julia is not that worried about it even though it is not her fault. She was raised during the time the Party was brainwashing minds of little children with their pitiful lies. This is how Julia differs with Winston relating to the way they hate the party and I think George Orwell wanted to show the reader that difference in chapter 5.

Political Act Between the Party and Winston and Julia

When Winston did what he did with Julia at the hideout, he refers to it as a political act. What he meant by that is that Winston and Julia is protesting against the party. This is mostly because he and Julia think that the party is unlawful against married people only can have sex. Even with that There was no pleasure in it and the party only wants children to be born so that they can be brainwashed and be part of the party. Both Winston and Julia hated that ideas since they believe that sex should be something that should come though the heart, but mostly thorough the love of both partners otherwise it is just a waste of time.

The Juxtapose of Love and Hate

Love and Hate is a word that basically describes how a person feels about people, a certain someone, or a thing. Both are feeling that people feel mostly in their heart. But there is more to love and hate than just that. It has to do with the type of feeling people experience with love and hate.

Love can be described as a feeling of joy and happiness. This is how Winston and Julia feel between each other. Both people feel certain happiness between each other which is some thing that the party can’t give them at any time of the day. That is the reason why they go to secret hiding spots so that they can express how they love each other there where the party can’t penalize them.

Hate on the other hand can be described as a feeling of anger and revenge. If love is ever to be broken by an injustice act, then that feeling of love automatically becomes hate. This is what Big Brother and his party has created to some of their citizens especially Winston and Julia. Big Brother had created laws that just backstab the whole fact of human rights. An example of this is that people can’t be married unless the party thinks there will be no love in that marriage.

Love and hate have a few similarities that deal with where both emotions are felt. Then again, love and hate has their differences relating to what you are actually feeling for each emotion. Basically love gives off a positive feeling while hates gives off a negative feeling. That is the reason that separates these two apart.

Removal of Words in our Society?

During the scene in the book 1984 where Winston was having lunch with Syme, Syme was talking about the significance of Newspeak in which consisted of words being vanished so that people could not express their thoughts. Even though this deletion of words is happening in Oceania in the book, I believe that it is not happening in our society. Our society has rights that enables people to express themselves whenever they want to using their preferred language. It will be difficult to get rid of words for a particular language because there are other languages that people can still use to express their thoughts leaving that so called "Newspeak" plan to be labeled as failure. For a person like Syme, living in the society that I live in every single day will be like getting beaten up every day by a bully It is more like a dead society that fits Syme perfectly that have people getting brainwashed by some telescreen, that cannot say what their conscience thinks that should be said.

Throughout all the lies in history, I believe that Adolf Hitler telling the Jews that they will live a better life at the ghetto was the biggest lie in history.

Manipulated Information from Government Possible in Society?

I totally believe that the government manipulating information is possible in our society. This is due to a point in which our society's government think that telling a particular truth to the public can be dangerous in terms of security, health, as well as themselves, etc. And to prevent that, the government might manipulate or not even mention the truth to their people in our society. I think of this as the government backstabbing me and the people of the society every time they lie or not mentioning the truth and killing us to death. But I doubt that the government will control or manipulate almost every information available to them. This is to the point in which the government don't want the public to notice that they are controlling information and tell most of the truth. Sure that most of the people of a particular society won't notice the lies but not a little percentage of that society. That is because I believe that there are at least somebody will eventually find out that the government is being corrupt of telling lies to the public and spread that message to every one living in that corrupt government. Then you notice that the government in which was telling lies to people about any topic has collapsed and went to extinction like the communist Soviet Union in the 1990's.

Government's Witholding of the Truth

How would it be possible for a government to keep the truth from it's citizens?

- The government might tell only part of the truth and keep the other part untold for some reasons.
- The government might take the truth and replace it with lies believable to citizens.

For what reasons did the government want to control or manipulate information?

-So that citizens might not leave that particular government they are in now and move to what citizens think is a better government to live with.
-So that citizens do not rebel against the government.
-To prevent citizens from thinking negative of the government.
